The third installment of our History Hike series with Old Berwick Historical Society join us at Orris Falls. In the Tatnic area near the border of South Berwick and Wells, lies at the heart of an ancient volcanic caldera. Encompassed within this extraordinarily rich area of vernal pools, a 90-foot gorge, and a wetland area actively dammed by beaver. Historian Neill DePaoli will describe the pivotal role of the beaver fur trade at Newichawannock (today’s South Berwick) in the 1600s and the influence of English trade on Wabanaki culture.

Corresponding Lecture: Lecture March 23, 7:30 p.m.: Katherine Grandjean, assistant professor of history at Wellesley College, will describe the role of Native runners in linking English settlements and shaping the destiny of New Englanders. *All OBHS/GWRLT History Hikes include a corresponding lecture. This lecture will happen 1-2 weeks ahead of the hike.

RSVP as numbers are limited. It's always wise to confirm date, location and footgear recommendations. Free to members, suggested donation of $5 ($10/family) for non-members.
