Liberty’s Price:  From Slave to Freeman in Early York County

Join us and Old Berwick Historical Society at our York Pond & Punkintown Area straddling South Berwick and Eliot. This area contains both historic and natural features, including the remnants of an old granite quarry, stone walls from lost farms, Bartlett’s Mill Pond, and York Pond. Rosanne Adams, president of the Eliot Historical Society, will relate the story of Black Will of Eliot, his rise from slave to landed farmer in 1700, and shifting attitudes toward race in early York County.

Corresponding Lecture: Lecture September 28, 7:30 p.m.Linford Fisher of Brown University uncovers the history of the trade in Caribbean slaves by New England merchants in colonial America.*All OBHS/GWRLT History Hikes include a corresponding lecture. This lecture will happen 1-2 weeks ahead of the hike.
